THE FACTS
When Raymond Robinson was nine years old, he was injured in an electrical accident. He was climbing an electric pole to look at a bird nest when he hit his face on the wires and fell. He lived, despite the doctors’ expectations, but was severely disfigured. He lost his eyes, nose, part of his mouth, and his right arm, earning the nickname Charlie No Face. Although some of the crueler people in town made fun of him, his close friends and neighbors all said he was a very kind man. As an adult, Raymond made belts, wallets, and doormats to sell. Afraid of creating a panic, Raymond began taking walks along State Route 351 at night, using a walking stick to guide himself. He was hit by cars multiple times, though he survived every incident. Some people came to talk to Raymond during his walks, but he usually hid during these times. On a few occasions, however, he would trade a short conversation or a photograph for beer or cigarettes. Raymond died in 1985, at the age of seventy four.
